Spring / Summer 2011 sees plenty of new yarns and lots of reconfirmations, especially with cotton in its finer and medium thickness versions. Linen has regained its footing and becomes more interesting, mixed with synthetic, often shiny fabrics. Viscose in its many forms, as seen on the catwalks of London and Paris, is very impressive, also presented in subtle and impalpable weights, with hints of shiny and opaque. Metallic threads are everywhere and lend the knitted garment a rich and opalescent appearance. Much in evidence are the perforated cut effects, sometimes made with real network structures, or simulated thanks to the devor effects. Lace is not sure in the background, especially the lighter, floating, almost transparent or multicolour versions. Country-style tricot finishing conflicts with flowing fabrics. Colours are the strong point of the season: blue contends the throne of sovereign colour with black, combining them in various shades greens are still growing and overflowing between bright petrol and liquid turquoise. Many whIts, often combined with a wide range of greys, but also in natural tones such as mud or faded black. Crocheted cardigans, jackets decorated with filet crochet, caps and mini-skirts embellished with feathers, sequins and beads in the highly acclaimed collection of Anna Sui. Stretched and frayed effects for knitwear proposed by Alexander Wang in his New York show, which confirm the success of the vintage mood.
